Deuteronomy 18: 15-20

The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your own brothers. You must listen to him. For this is what you ask of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”

The Lord said to me:  “What they say is good. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account.”

A Thought

When Moses had received God’s commandments on the mountain, the people trembled with fear when they saw thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke. Because of their fear of death, they then told Moses to speak to them instead of the voice of the Lord. Now Moses tells them God will raise up a prophet from their own brothers that the word of God’s command will be in his mouth and if they do not listen to him, they will answer to God himself.

God did send more than a prophet to speak his word, God sent his own Son–Jesus the Christ. We must listen to him and follow his commands and Jesus will be our righteous advocate with the Father. When we have received the love of God by following his commands, we have no need of fear.

Our Prayer

Thank you Father was your word given by your Son so that we may be reconciled to your great love for us. Speak to us by the power of your Holy Spirit that we may listen and follow your commands. Fill us with your love so that we will have no need of fear. We ask in the name of Jesus, amen.
