Isaiah 40: 21-27
Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner than they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.
“To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength not one of them are missing.
Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God”?
A Thought
The greatest of man’s knowledge can only be compared to that of a grasshopper when in view of the greatness of our creator, God the Almighty. God reminds Israel (and also us) that He formed the earth, the heavens and sits enthroned above the earth ruling over all creation. He has stretched out the heavens like a tent where he lives and governs all creation including man. How can we as a people, in whom God created to live only a very short time before we are swept away, think that we can hide from God or that we have no need of God?
Our Prayer
Father thank you for your great power over all creation and yet you are mindful of each personal need we have. There is none to compare to your greatness and power. You have provided our salvation and every care because of your great love for us. Reveal to us any sin we have committed in darkness that the light of Christ may cleanse us. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
