1 John 1:5 – 2:2

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you:  God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but for the sins of the whole world.

A Thought

John writes with much affection about Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, that we must live in the light of the truth of God to have fellowship with him. We must all come to the light of God to realize and confess that we are sinners. When we live in the truth by the light of God’s word, the blood of Jesus Christ will forgive our sins and make us righteous because of his sacrifice. John writes this message to declare what he heard from Jesus so that we will not sin but when we do sin Jesus will speak to the Father on our behalf.

Our Prayer

Father we know that we have sinned against you. Thank you that we can be made pure by the atoning blood of your Son when we confess our sins to Him. We desire to be in fellowship with you by living in the truth of your word. Fill us with your light that we will see clearly and not be deceived. We desire to be your salt and light in this world of darkness that others may see your love for them through us. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
