John 3: 1-9

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

“How can a man be born again when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear it’s sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

“How can this be?”  Nicodemus asked.

A Thought

Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish religious leaders who were probably jealous of Jesus, came to Jesus in the cover of darkness searching for answers. The answer Jesus gave him was quite a surprise. Jesus told him if he wanted to see the kingdom of God, he must be born again. Nicodemus needed an answer as to how this could be. Everyone is born of flesh and water when he is received into this world, but to enter the kingdom of God we must be born anew of the Spirit. The Spirit like the wind cannot be seen with the eye, you can hear its sound but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. We must trust the Spirit to lead us into all truth.

Our Prayer

Father thank you for our parents born of flesh, but more important thank you for your Spirit who leads us to be born of spirit through your Son, Jesus the Christ that we may approach your throne of love, grace and mercy as your dear children. We ask for your wisdom and revelation to know and serve you better in Jesus’ name, amen.
