Genesis 3: 8-15

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

And the Lord said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

The man said, “The woman you put here with me–she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

Then the Lord said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”

The woman said, “The serpent deceived me and I ate.”

So the Lord said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed are you above all the livestock and the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will stick his heel.”

A Thought

God made everything in the beautiful garden perfect for Adam and Eve with everything they may need or want provided for them to enjoy including daily fellowship with him. So why are they now hiding from God? The one tree God had commanded them not to eat from is what they did. Why did they disobey God? First Adam blames God and Eve because God put her there. Then Eve blames the serpent because he deceived her. Why is this so important to all of mankind? Because this is where sin (disobedience to God) entered the world and with sin comes judgement (separation from God). The serpent, because of Satan using him to get at God, is now cursed above all the livestock and wild animals, will crawl on his belly, eat the dust of the earth and God put enmity between he and the woman and their offspring. Satan still uses his same tactics to deceive mankind today. The good news is that through the woman our Savior, Jesus Christ was able to pay the price of all our sin with his life, death and resurrection. It is a free gift to all who will follow God’s commands and receive it. Are you deceived or are you in a right relationship with God? Can you hear God calling?

Our Prayer

Father we ask for your discernment to recognize the tactics of Satan when he tries to separate us from you. Help us to study your Word to hear your voice when you call for us. We desire to walk with you in obedience. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
