James 3: 13-17
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in humility that comes from wisdom? But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.
There are two very different types of “wisdom”. “Wisdom” of this world is unspiritual and comes from the devil on earth. This is where we will find disorder and the practice of evil because of our envy and selfish ambition. If we desire pure wisdom, we will seek righteousness that only comes from heaven. We will be peaceful, loving, considerate, submissive, impartial, sincere, and full of mercy. We will live a good life and produce good fruit.
Father, help us to let go of all bitterness, envy and selfish ambition. Help us to gain your wisdom, to love you and others more than ourselves. In Jesus’ name, amen.
