Mark 12: 41-44
Jesus sat down the opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.
Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything–all she had to live on.”
A Thought
One man looks at how little he has and gives nothing. Another looks at how much he has and will give only to be seen of others. Neither is true of the poor widow in our story today. Even though her need was great, she gave all she had. We all need to give whether little or much in secret with a joyful heart for the glory of God.
Our Prayer
Father help us to be a joyful giver in secret. Thank you that when we give of the first fruits of all our labors, you will bless the whole of what remains. Our treasure needs to be in your kingdom in heaven; not our kingdom here on earth. Praise your holy name. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
