Genesis 15: 1-6
After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” But Abram said, “O Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son coming from your own body will be your heir.” He took him outside and said, “Look up at the heavens and count the stars–if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
A Thought
Abram has just rescued his nephew Lot from the kings who had captured him when they had conquered Sodom and Gomorrah. Abram gave a tenth of Lot’s possessions to Melchizedek king of Salem as a tithe unto the Lord. Abram refused to take any other possessions because of an oath he had made to the Lord. Abram wanted everyone to know that the Lord God is the One who blesses him. Now God is speaking with Abram telling him not to be afraid, that he will protect and reward him. Abram questions what can he reward him with since he has no heir. The Lord then promises Abram an heir from his own body and that his offspring will as many as the stars in the sky. Abram believed the Lord and God credited it as righteousness. We all need to believe every word of God.
