Hebrews 12: 18-29

You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; to a trump blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.” The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”

But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the first born, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

A Thought

The writer of Hebrews is making a contrast between the Law that was given Moses with fear and guilt, to the gift of freedom that comes in love, mercy and righteousness of Jesus. Reminding them to remain faithful to the new covenant. The law was incomplete in that it could only reveal what sin was, exposing their guilt that they could not remove. Jesus became their mediator between God and man in whom they could be made perfect by his shed blood. We are all still condemned, guilty of sin today until, we receive the same gift of forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ. Then we are set free for joyful obedience as members of the church of the first born with our names written in heaven.

Our Prayer

Heavenly Father thank you for removing our guilt and sin by sending us forgiveness through you son, Jesus Christ. Help us to remain faithful to your word, to not be deceived by the cares of this world, not to fall back into the bondage of sin. There is no other way to you except through your son. We desire to worship and praise your holy name, in Jesus’ name, amen.
