2 Peter 1:16-21
We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shinning in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had it’s origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
A Thought
Peter is warning the church to be intentional about growing in their faith and to reject those who would misrepresent the truth. Peter reminds them with authority of their eyewitness of the power, honor and glory that Christ received from God the Father, the voice that they heard from heaven declaring Christ to be the Son of God, and also of the Scripture of the word of the prophets of long ago that was given by the Holy Spirit concerning Jesus the Christ. Many false prophets will come even today, but the Spirit-inspirited authority of God’s word must be final.
Our Prayer
Father thank you for your Spirit-inspired holy Scriptures found in the Holy Bible that will teach us to grow in our faith with you. The Scriptures will teach us all truth about you so we can receive the very nature of you. We will be able to recognize false teachers when we know your word taught to us by the Holy Spirit. Help us to continue to grow our faith in you and to be your light shinning in our dark world, giving hope to all who will receive you by faith. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
