John 3: 1-8
Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
In reply, Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no man can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked, “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no man can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
A Thought
Nicodemus had a very good question: “How can a man be born when he is old?” Jesus answers by saying we must be born of water and the Spirit. It is my thought we are all born of water from our mother’s womb. Of course, it may have more of a spiritual meaning than my simple thought, like water baptism. The Spirit is part of God that leads us to Jesus Christ. In Jesus we become a new creation where the old things are passed away (our sins) and we become a new creation (with a new, forgiven life) filled with the Spirit of God teaching us to grow into the new person God has created us to be for his glory.
Our Prayer
Father thank you for sending your Spirit to lead us into the truth of your Son, Jesus the Christ. Thank you for faith to believe in your Son that we can be “born again” and enter your Kingdom. Lead us by your Holy Spirit into all truth. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
