1 Peter 1: 13-16

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given to you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written:  “Be holy, because I am holy.”

A Thought

Peter is writing to prepare both Jewish and Gentile Christians of the trails and sufferings that they will experience because of their faith in the new birth that they have received through salvation in Christ. Peter says to be obedient children:  controlling their former evil desires; keeping their minds on their hope in the grace that they will receive when Christ will be revealed; to be holy as Christ is holy. This same message is for us as followers of Christ today. We must be prepared to face trials and even possable sufferings. We must control our minds and set our lives apart from the ways of the world. We must grow and move toward holiness that is found only in Christ. Remember that God has promised that our sufferings will be nothing to compare to the glorious grace we will receive when Christ returns.

Our Prayer

Father thank you for giving us salvation in Jesus Christ and for your sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit teaching us obedience by your grace. Help us to trust you and your word while we learn to be your obedient children. We desire to live holy and joyful lives even during grief and sufferings. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
