Matthew 11: 16-19, 25-30
“To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others: “ ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance: we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and “sinners.” ‘ But wisdom is proven right by her actions.’ “
At that time Jesus said, “I praise you Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
A Thought
Jesus is rebuking this generation by comparing them to children because they did not receive the words of John and now they are not willing to receive the wisdom of his teachings. Jesus thanks his Father that because of their unbelief, the message from his Father is hidden from the wise (in their own eyes) and the unlearned and revealed to those with childlike faith to believe. The only ones that will receive the Father is the ones with faith in the Son as he chooses to reveal himself. Jesus make a call to all who will receive him to come unto Him and he will give them rest for their souls and will make their load easier to carry.
Our Prayer
Father thank you for revealing yourself through your Son that we may gain fellowship with you. Help us to accept your Word by faith to learn how to find rest for our souls in Christ Jesus and live godly lives for you. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
