Psalm 78: 1-7
O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from of old–what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us. We will not hide from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done. He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
A Thought
Each generation has an obligation to teach their children the love that God has faithfully given to his people from the generations before. Israel was notorious for their continual unfaithfulness and disobedience to God although God was faithful to do mighty miracles to deliver them from hardships and from their enemies. God set a standard by decrees and the law by which his people were to follow and to teach their children to avoid the consequences of their disobedience. Today we need to warn our children of the mistakes mankind have made that separated us from God. We must choose to put the teachings of Jesus in their heart to build their faith in God. We must teach them the cost Jesus had to pay for our redemption back to God. We must give our personal witness of God in own lives by the way we love God and our neighbors as we obey the Bible God’s love letter to us. We must praise God for his love, power and the wonders he has done through all generations. If we love our children, we must teach our children to love God.
Our Prayer
Father praise your holy name for your faithful love and forgiveness to all generations. Help us to teach our children the love you have for them and the consequences of disobedience. Forgive us where we have failed to show you to the world. Awaken us with the power of the Holy Spirit to be your witness with your love and our service to others that they may see you in us. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
