When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.
Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seeds to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.
The writer of this Psalm is writing testimony of the joyful praise to the Lord for returning those captive back to Zion. When we, like the exiles, disobey God we are open to captivity by the enemy. It may appear to us that it could only be a dream to be set free. When we bow before God, filled with tears of repentance, we will be restored back to the God who has done great things for us. When we sow seeds in tears, we should be prepared to reap a harvest of joy.
Holy Father, thank you for your gift of joy when we come to you in repentance. As we remember our testimony of your forgiveness of our sins, fill our mouths with laughter and our tongues with songs of joyful praise to you. You have done great things for us. Help us to be a testimony of your love and forgiveness as we watch and pray in tears for the salvation of others before your return. We ask in the name of Jesus, amen.
