2 Peter 3: 8-15

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends:  With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed his coming. That day will bring about destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote with the wisdom that God gave him.

A Thought

Peter is writing this second letter, aware that his life on earth will be short, as a reminder to live by Christian values to escape the corruption of evil in the world. Some will question our faith in the promise of Christ’s return, but remember that God’s value of time is different from our understanding of time. God is patient wanting everyone to come to repentance to avoid the destruction when the day of the Lord comes. God wants us to live holy and godly lives so that we will be a part of a new heaven and a new earth that will be the home of righteousness. We must be patient in the Lord’s return so others will receive salvation. We must look forward to that day while we make every effort today to be found spotless, blameless at peace with God. Be encouraged, Christ will return!

Our Prayer

Father thank you that you have given the way of Jesus the Christ to everyone to receive salvation. You have given us your inspired word to live by, and the power of the Holy Spirit to teach and lead us into all truth. We desire to be patient and blameless as we watch and pray for your return. Awaken us to live holy lives. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
