Isaiah 9: 2-7
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the shadow of death a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder. For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be distined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
Isaiah foretells the promised Jesus the Messiah that the zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish for his people that are walking in darkness, living in the shadow of death. There will be great rejoicing as the burdens are removed from the shoulders of the people when they receive the great light of the child, a son who will reign on David’s throne, establishing justice and righteousness forever.
Over seven hundred years later, Jesus the Messiah, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace did come to earth born unto a virgin, Mary. Now, we await with great expectation for Christ’s return to setup his kingdom where there will be rejoicing with righteousness and peace for ever.
Father thank you for the gift of your Son for our redemption made possible to all who will receive your love and grace with humble repentance. Awaken us to be your people of hope to our world filled with darkness. Make us your light to others as we await for the return of Christ. We ask in Jesus’ name, amen.
