John 3: 16-21
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he does not believe in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that he may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done throughout God.”
Today the world is celebrating “Merry Christmas” with the exchanging of gifts and the excitement of perhaps receiving everything that they had hoped for. The true gift of Christmas is recorded in God’s holy words found in today’s reading of scripture in John. The gift of love from God the Father through the life, death and resurrection of his Son Jesus the Christ was given to our world, filled with of the darkness of sin, that we might receive the light of forgiveness. The disobedience of man in the Garden of Eden brought the penalty of death to all mankind. Our penalty was paid by the blood of God’s own Son, but we must believe to receive this gift of light to see our own darkness to be set free to live by the truth of God and his love. Are you living in darkness or in the light of love? Merry Christmas in the light of God’s word to all who will receive by faith this gift of eternal life, in Jesus’ name, amen.
Father thank you for the greatest gift ever given–love. Help us to accept this love and give this same love to others in Jesus’ name, amen.
